Wave Point Physical Therapy
Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)
Struggling with stubborn aches or stiffness? IASTM uses specialized tools to target tight areas, ease tension, and boost healing.

Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) is an advanced manual therapy technique used in physical therapy to treat musculoskeletal injuries, chronic pain, and tissue dysfunction. Using specialized tools, the therapist applies controlled pressure and scraping motions to the affected soft tissues, including muscles, tendons, and ligaments. These tools are designed to enhance the therapist’s ability to detect and treat areas of fascial restrictions, scar tissue, and muscle adhesions that may be contributing to pain, limited mobility, or dysfunction.
IASTM works by stimulating blood flow to the treated area, promoting healing, and breaking down scar tissue or adhesions that may have formed due to injury or overuse. The technique encourages collagen production and tissue remodeling, helping to restore normal tissue structure and function. As the therapist moves the instrument over the skin, it can also help release muscle tension, improve flexibility, and increase range of motion.
IASTM is particularly effective for treating conditions such as tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, muscle strains, and chronic pain syndromes. It is often combined with other physical therapy modalities, such as stretching, strengthening exercises, or joint mobilizations, to maximize recovery. The technique is generally well-tolerated, with minimal discomfort, and provides patients with long-term relief and improved functional outcomes.
