Wave Point Physical Therapy
Nerve Guides
Holistic approach combining yoga postures, breathing exercises, and meditation techniques to address specific health concerns and promote overall wellness

Nerve glides, also known as neural mobilizations, are specialized techniques used in physical therapy to improve the mobility and function of nerves. These exercises involve gentle, controlled movements that help the nerves move smoothly through surrounding tissues, reducing tension, and alleviating pain or discomfort caused by nerve compression or irritation. Nerve gliding is particularly effective for addressing conditions such as sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, thoracic outlet syndrome, and radiculopathy.
In a nerve glide, the physical therapist guides the patient through specific movements that gently stretch and mobilize the nerve, promoting better nerve function and reducing symptoms like numbness, tingling, or radiating pain. The goal is to encourage the nerve to "glide" smoothly within its surrounding tissues without excessive tension, which can occur due to factors like injury, inflammation, or scar tissue buildup.
Nerve glides can target different parts of the body, depending on the affected nerve. For example, the upper limb nerve glide focuses on nerves like the median or ulnar nerve, while the lower limb nerve glide targets the sciatic nerve. These exercises help to restore normal movement patterns, improve circulation to the nerves, and decrease neural tension. When done correctly and consistently, nerve gliding can significantly improve mobility, reduce pain, and enhance overall function, making it an important part of rehabilitation for many nerve-related conditions.
